Comic Art using Mod Podge

Who doesn’t love reading the ‘funnies’, a.k.a. the Sunday comics?  I remember being a kid and asking my parents to take out the comic section from the Sunday newspaper.   I enjoyed reading them, but did I actually ‘get’ the jokes?  Well, I’m not so sure…

Once it was time to add the final touches to my Kids Bathroom makeover, I want to do a project with Mod Podge.  My first thought was to use fun fabrics or patterned papers, but then my husband had the suggestion of using comics….I had a complete {Ah Hah} moment.  Kids and Comics…how perfect?!

Here’s how it came out ~And here’s the process… I started with 3 – 12″ x 12″ MDF (medium density fiberboard) panels that were leftover from another project.

Then I cut out some of my favorite past-time ‘funnies’ from the Sunday paper.I had a really good time reading the stories.  To be honest, I haven’t even looked at the comic section in years, and I certainly have been missing out.  I was cracking up… they were REALLY funny… (duh, Jenna… that’s why they’re called comics).  Reading from a mom’s perspective, they were totally geared towards parenthood and the trials & tribulations that we go through on a daily basis!!!

Time to use the Mod Podge!

For the background art, I used some other areas of the comic section, as well as crossword puzzles.  I put some Mod Podge on the MDF surface, then adhered the comics that I dampened with water, to the gluey surface.  I coated the tops of the comics with more Mod Podge.  I put 3 coats on the top to make sure it was well coated and protected!

TIP: A great trick when using Mod Podge with paper is to wet it before applying it to your surface.  It makes it more pliable and easier to work with. I learned my lesson with this.  The first time I used Mod Podge with paper, it tore and just didn’t work ~ so frustrating!

Then it was time to enjoy the funny comics!

To hang the comic art,  I used simple picture hangers that I nailed to the back of the MDF panels.  Once they were done, they were ready to hang on the wall.

This was a really fun project that provided definite humor along the way!  Have you created any projects lately using Mod Podge?  Have you used comics for any of your projects?
