Adding Orange Accents in my Bedroom Makeover

It’s been over a week since I’ve shared happenings of my mini bedroom makeover.  Last week was quite busy, but throughout the craziness, I was able to squeeze in a few moments to get this makeover moving forward.  The aesthetic that I am desiring for this space is calm, inviting, and warm.  The walls were just painted last year, so they are not changing.  The bedding, which is classic white that I purchased from Pottery Barn years ago is also remaining.  So you’re probably asking, “What am I changing and why I am doing a makeover?”.  Upon updating the window treatments (which I love), I’ve also made some new pillows (which I’ll share soon), bought a new rug, and added some accents of orange to freshen up my little oasis.

When I first started thinking about this room, I was torn on what the accent color should be.  After almost moving forward with a turquoise / blue hue, I decided on orange.  Not a rustic color orange, but a bright, vibrant orange – a perfect accent to the white and taupe/gray tones.

The room really needed an update starting with the wall decor over the bed.  We had a piece of art (nothing expensive or worth any value) for many years, and I wanted something with more punch and presence.  I found this sunburst-type mirror at Homegoods a few months ago.  The look and price (of $29.99) was quite appealing and I snagged it up.  At the time of purchase, I didn’t quite know where it would go, but I couldn’t leave it – I just loved the design and spider-web type look.

After finally deciding on the orange accent, I knew this sunburst style mirror would be perfect for above the bed.

To start this makeover, I used foil to cover the center mirror (a very handy spray paint tip!) …

…and took my new favorite color, Valspar La Fonda Copper, and started spray painting.

Two coats later, it was complete and ready to hang!

After living with this new over-the-bed decor, I had to bring some more of this vibrant orange accent color into the room.  Next up for transforming?  The base of the 2 lamps that sit on the dresser opposite of the bed!  I originally thought about spraying painting the shade, but I love them so much, that I decided on updating the base of the lamps instead.  This is a picture of them before their makeover.

Again, two coats later…

…and they were complete!

So what do you think?  Do you like the orange accents?

In the midst of these two spray painting projects, Valspar changed the design of their spray paint cans.  The newly designed can now allows you to spray paint at “any angle”.  I have to admit though, that the nozzle you press down on the new spray paint can is not as easy as the traditional spray can.  I had to press down much harder, and I found myself focusing more on the can instead of the project, and that made spray painting more difficult.  When spray painting, it’s a must to do light, even strokes, and I wasn’t doing that with the new style can.  This wasn’t a project where I was reviewing a product, but it just happened to work out that way.  I wasn’t asked or paid to give my opinion on the new Vaslpar Spray Paint, but I just thought I’d share my experiences and thoughts.

Have you tried the new Valspar spray paint can design?

I still have MORE to share on my mini bedroom makeover, but it’s coming along and I’ll showcase the final REVEAL soon!

Thanks Cassie! I have alot of orange in my home too and wanted to steer away when doing this redesign in the bedroom, but I kept coming back to it and instead of fighting it, I just went with it!

Ooh, I’m loving the color with the walls and bedding! It gives a nice pop to the room! Thanks for the heads up on the spray paint. Looking forward to seeing what else you’ve done with the room!

The orange touch is so nice with the wall color and headboard! It really changes the look!
Now wishing I had gotten the orange lantern I saw last week! (Non-buying remorse!)

Love the orange (which is one of my favorite colors)…HATE the new can! :( I use spray paint a lot and always use those add-on trigger sprayers when painting large projects. With the new Valspar cans, you can’t use the trigger sprayer…and I also find the new nozzle a lot harder to use. It must have been redsigned by a man!

Well I’m glad I am not the only one who gives the new Valspar spray cans two thumbs DOWN! I guess they didn’t have bloggers and DIYers test it out – definitely a man design, lol!

I love your new orange accents. They are fantastic. I am such an orange fan, have been since childhood and I love what a little orange can do for a room. You made some fantastic decisions here.

We love the orange accents! That’s the accent color we used for our fall decorating. We also spray painted lamps orange! You can see our orange accents on our blog under Mother’s Home and also under Daughter’s home. ~ Barbara and Alicia

Thanks so much Meghan. I have ALOT of orange (and other warm tones) throughout my house and really wanted to go in a different direction for the bedroom, bu when I started it, the orange color just made sense. Instead of fighting it, I just went with it. Thanks for the comment. Happy Thanksgiving! xo Jenna

Be still my heart! I am currently painting our dining room a dark gray. I am going to use pops of a vivid orange after seeing those colors used on various ideaboards. My husband has been crinkling his nose when I mention the colors because he can’t visualize it – I just showed him this post and he actually said “Yeah… I like that!” WOOHOO!

That’s great Tammy! Glad my room with orange accents helped your husband visualize what a pop of color brings into a space. I can’t wait to see your dining room once it’s complete. Send pictures. -Jenna
