For the past year, I’ve been knee deep in some amazing interior transformations. One in particular, was renovating a commercial space into a new restaurant…

Flatbread Social.

Flatbread Social is located on Henry Street in Saratoga Springs, NY. It specializes in wood fired pizzas topped with farm fresh ingredients, served with craft beer and cocktails.

This new establishment was spear headed and created by the owners of Henry Street Taproom – another restaurant I designed – who I have worked with for years.

The space was previously another restaurant and closed. The space was dark, drear, dated, and needed a complete overhaul.

Once a plan was in place, the town provided approval, and the old was cleared out (that sounds so much easier than the process actually was), we were able to start the steps to creating a whole new aesthetic!

Here is a peak at some views of the previous restaurant space…

And this is the result of a lot of labor + love…

The bar area stayed in the same vicinity as before, but the entire space was redesigned and overhauled.

The overall aesthetic vision for the restaurant was to create a California, laidback, 80s vibe style space.

Some of the mechanicals + electrical components were challenging to work with as they are positioned (and needed to remain) in the maining dining area. To conceal them, I created an enclosure framed with 1×8 horizontal pine boards that were given a whitewashed finish to convey a distressed beachy aesthetic.

The whitewashed boards were continued around the face of the bar and to finish it a steel grey concrete finish granite was used for the countertop.

The mural is quite the showstopper. From the start, I envisioned this wall being the focal point of the restaurant. Aside from the two oversized pizza ovens, the custom mural is so incredibly vibrant and engaging.

Centered on the mural is a striking tiered bottle storage rack that I designed using a copper frame and distressed wood for the shelves. Above are three copper sconces that shine beautifully over the workspace.

Touches of copper were also used in other areas of the space, like the foot rail at the bar…

Can we just chat about the flooring for a moment?

Isn’t it incredible? This was a vision I had all along and I couldn’t ask for it to be better executed. The wood floor was existing and was cut to weave in 3 different colors of randomly placed 8″ hexagon ceramic tiles.

Here is a picture during the installation when we layed out the pattern…

And here is the result…

It’s all in the details…

Each tables are topped with a simple turquoise painted low box that contains the silverware, napkins, and spices…

These pizza ovens are where it all started… When the project was first presented to me, these oversized ovens were already chosen and at the start, there was only to be one. As the creation of the space evolved, a pair of ovens were decided and are positioned on center as you walk in the space.

The view when you enter through the front doors…

A fun and eye catching chalkboard wall is a focal point on the back wall. The 9 pizzas on the menu are creatively displayed and labeled with the fresh ingredients. A do-it-yourself pizza is also an option with any topping you’d like!

Who doesn’t love shuffleboard?!? It’s addicting. Great for kids. And equally (or maybe more) fun for adults.

Again, another mechanical area that needed to be concealed got wrapped in horizontal whitewashed boards.

Not every person knows the rules of shuffleboard, so they were painted on the door. Here they are…

The booths, adjacent to the 2 shuffleboard tables, is a seating hot spot.

To balance the dynamic art mural at the bar, a calmer, but equally interesting + engaging art wall was created in the seating space above the booths.

Here was the original vision board that I presented…

What do you think?!? Did I achieve the vision that I set out for?

It was so awesome to work on this renovation project to create a fun and unique space. The undertaking of this transformation – design + execution – pushed me as a Designer (which is what I strive for with every project) and I was able to create a space that so many can enjoy.

Of course, I’m all about the design and how it looks, but I will say the food is equally incredible. The aesthetic + the food will not disappoint!

Don’t wait to head to Flatbread Social.

Master Bathroom Renovation: DEMO!

Hi All!

Last I left you, I mentioned we were about to undergo a major renovation of the master bathroom. It was a space that got a DIY makeover a few years back, but with wear + tear it was time for an overhaul.

As much as I adore color, I could only image this new bathroom to be soft + serene and clean + calm. The overall aesthetic will be based more on texture rather than color. Plus layers will add an important element to give the overall space contract + depth.

Just to share a reminder of the ‘before’ space…

The morning of demo day, I snapped the picture above of the bathroom, and in no time the contractors got to work…

From the tub to the vanity to the toilet, everything was ripped out!

As I mentioned in my last post, this renovation is a dual endeavour.  Due lack of time + components outside our skill set, we are taking on some areas of the renovation, while other areas will be performed by a contractor.  As I previously said, I don’t want to be without a bathroom for months AND I want to stay sane (somewhat).

The contractors are tackling the major areas including demo + installing the main components – shower pan + fittings, toilet, vanity + faucet.

DAY ONE

On the first day, the three-man crew removed the existing pre-fab tub, the sheetrock above the tub, the toilet, and the vanity.  It’s a small space, but by lunch time, the space was cleared out…

Instead of installing a new tub, we decided to use the 30″ x 60″ outcove for a shower.  After the tub + sheetrock was removed, the space was ready for the new shower pan.  For the new tile to adhere to, hardiboard (also known as cement board or backerboard) was installed.

Sheetrock is still a great product for the walls and ceiling of a bathroom, just not in the tub/shower area. Cement board is made with actual cement + a firberglass mesh exterior, so it’s waterproof and won’t deteriorate over time when/if it comes in contact with water.

Additionally, the new vanity that I chose is 48″ whereas the existing is 36″… I’m gaining 12″ of counterspace – I’m over the moon! Because of this change, the electrical wiring for the light needs to be moved so it will be centered on the new 48″ space.

By days end, this was the result…

Check out the purple wall color that was behind the toilet…  it was from before we renovated the last bathroom…  Gosh that color is ghastly and I was hoping to never see it again, ha.

DAY TWO

On the second day of renovation, the new shower pan was installed and the remainder of the space got prepped for tile.  After another day’s work, it was my turn to step in to install the tile.

Here’s a peak of how the finished cement board looks upon installation with the new shower pan…

It’s ready for me to tile!

I gotta get back to tiling…

Oh, and I’m still deciding on the accent tile.  Any suggestions?  What do you like best??

Bathroom Makeover: Plan of Action {Day 1}

I’m at it again…  another project!  And this is a biggie.  I know, I know…. I haven’t even waited 0.05 seconds before starting something new, but this project has been in the works for over a year and I’m thrilled that my thoughts + ideas are actually coming to fruition!  So the next big remodel… the hall/kids bathroom.

This bathroom got a mini DIY revamp about 3 years ago, but it’s been used & abused by two kiddos, so it was time to put my design expertise to work and create a space that would handle the everyday splashes & wear of two busy bees.

Of course, I can’t start the remodel without a plan of action.  So here it is.  My creative vision board for the new bathroom space…

Bathroom Makeover: Creative Vision Board for the new space. Filled with basics + layers of bold. An entire DIY bathroom remodel.

I’m thrilled to be partnering with Lowe’s on this bathroom renovation and they’ve put me to the test to create a dynamic, on-trend space using their in-stock products (items that can be found in store versus online).   My vision for this revamp is to mix my design style of classic eclectic – classic for the background with bold elements layered in!   Since the tile is the dominate feature (shower + 3′ up all the walls) in this bathroom, that’s where I started…

My design philosophy when creating any space is to go classic for the elements that are expensive and/or difficult to change.  Similar to buying a sofa (which I typically go neutral in color and pattern), I wanted a tile that could “live” a long time…  I DO NOT plan on changing the tile in a year or two (or even 5), so it had to be something that I would like now & in the future.   There is nothing more classic and beautiful than 3 x 6 subway tile.  The bonus, it’s only .22 cents a tile – one of the least expensive Lowe’s has.  But (there’s always a but), I wanted something more.  I needed to create a wow-factor.  So along with the classic subway tile, I am also going to incorporate a gorgeous herringbone carrara marble.  Crossing my fingers that it looks as good on the wall as I envision it in my head {squeal}.

White subway tile - the most classic, most beautiful (an one of the least expensive) tile you can get!

Lowes Herringbone Carrera Marble

But you all know me, I need color somehow, someway.  That’s where the layers in the space come in.  I’ve selected a dynamic wallpaper that is really give an incredible contract against the classic white subway.  It’s bold.  It’s unexpected.  It’s me.

Serena and Lily Palmetto Wallpaper – Inkwell Blue/Khaki

The classic and the bold are covered!  The other elements in this new proposed bathroom are all going to enhance the beautiful classic and bold selections.  The old builder-grade vanity will be headed curbside and a new, more modern vanity in an espresso finish will be installed in it’s place.  For the lighting, I wanted to introduce another unexpected element and chose an oversized single exterior industrial-style light fixture.

Here’s the catch… I’m doing 95% of this bathroom renovation on my own.   I’m crazy, right?!  Nutso, but I’m determined.  The part that I will not be tackling is the install of the new tub and shower components.  The mister nor I have ever installed a tub or shower fittings and are too nervous to tackle it on our own and want to avoid any possible leaks.  We know when to call in the pros and the tub install is not within our skill-set.  I am sure we could do it, but who wants to take the chance?  Not Us!  Beyond that though, it’s all on me.  Tile, toilet, vanity, lighting… All DIY baby!

Since this bathroom makeover is almost an entirely DIY job, it’s going to take longer than typical, so our goal is to tackle it in 30 days.  30 days start to finish, complete!  Can we do it?  Let’s see.  I hope you’ll follow along on another crazy DIY adventure…

This post is sponsored by Lowe’s, but all thoughts and opinions are 100% my own.  I am thrilled (and a bit nervous) about tackling this project, but very excited to be partnering with Lowe’s on creating an entirely new bathroom space.  I’d love for you to follow along on this new project!
