Scouting, Shopping, Styling, Shooting

Summer’s here and even though I’ve been trying (trying is the key word) to slow down, I’m still busy working on some projects at my house and for clients.   One in particular is something I just took on and it’s going to be a fast-track, crazy, wam bam, start-and-finish-in-a-small-amount-of-time project.   It’s also slightly outside of the box of what I typically do (which I love and am always up for new challenges).

So here are the details…

There is a local magazine in my area called Saratoga Mama Magazine (affiliated with saratogamama.com) and since it’s debut earlier this year, I have contributed to each issue.  Colleen Pierre, the editor of the magazine, approached me a few weeks ago about collaborating with the magazine for the upcoming back to school  / Fall issue to makeover 3 different spaces that relate to family-use .  I was psyched, and of course said yes.  So here’s the catch…we basically have two days (thankfully not consecutively) to pull it all together.

Can we do it?

Yes we can!

Earlier this week we got started and it sure was a whirlwind, but at the same time such a blast.  It’s funny because being a Blogger and being the sole person of my business, I don’t often get the chance to throw ideas back and forth with someone else or even laugh about something funny that’s said or happens.  I sometimes miss having a partner-in-crime to work with on a project.  Maybe someday…  ANYWAY, Colleen and I had an awesome day.  We started out ‘touring’ the three spaces.  Took measurements and pictures, and basically created an overall design direction for each space.

Then we went SHOPPING.  I always have fun spending other peoples money, lol, j/k (well maybe not)…

Here are some fun outtakes.

People thought we were crazy…

…while others thought we were apart of HGTV with our skyhigh shopping cart and picture snapping. Only thing we were missing was an entourage and a camera crew.  Maybe that gave away that we were just two regular gals on a fun shopping trip.

So more about the each space and their function…

All the spaces have a similar thread, but are each unique.

The details.

Space 1: Mom Cave / Office

This soon-to-be mom space is located at the top of a landing and is prodominently used by mom for work related tasks.

What works:

  • the desk
  • the space

What doesn’t work:

  • lighting – in need of new lighting; the task lamp is too harsh; more softer lighting is needed
  • chair – something more stylish and comfortable
  • organization – in need of storage for papers, writing tools, binders, etc. etc. etc.
  • a place to relax – every mom space has to have a comfy spot to relax (even for a minute)
  • pizazz – it’s a nice space, but nice isn’t good enough.  Let’s make it amazing & functional!

Space 2: Family Central Command Center

Every home, kids or not, needs a spot for the stuff.  A place for everything – the keys, papers, etc. – and an organizational command center helps the family know where they are going at what time!

What works:

  • the space (it’s perfectly located in the ‘hub of the home’, the kitchen)

What doesn’t work:

  • well there’s nothing there, so basically we’re starting from scratch – yes!
  • organization!

Space 3: Kids Corner

With the plethora of kids arts and crafts supplies and their beautiful creations, it’s a must to have a kids corner so all their materials are in one spot.

What works:

  • the space
  • the cabinet (which will provide ample space for storage)

What doesn’t work:

  • a need for desk space
  • lighting
  • organization!
  • inspiration

That’s a wrap.  Those are the 3 soon-to-be-awesomely functional and fun spaces. As you can see, Colleen and I have our work cut out for us, but I know (especially after our shopping trip) that the result will totally be worth the work.  I promise to keep you posted on the progress (follow me on instagram).  It’ll be a few weeks before Day 2 of styling and shooting happens (thank goodness it didn’t happen back to back days).  If you’re local, the final product will be in the Fall issue of Saratoga Mama on stands the end of August. If you’re not, no worries.  I’ll be sure to post reveal pictures here!
