KITCHEN: Prime + Paint

Happy 2018! It’s been a few weeks since I shared about the progress of the DIY Kitchen Remodel in the Brick Ranch Fixer Upper.  Last I left off, I finished prepping the existing wood stained cabinets and I shared the design vision for the space.  Now that the cabinets are prepped, it’s time to get them painted so we can call this kitchen FINISHED!

Before sharing the progress of the cabinets, lets walk down memory lane with a preview of how the kitchen looked before and where it started…

BEFORE

After the cabinets were removed from the face frame and sanded, they were ready for primer.  With most furniture projects that I’ve painted, I always start with using a high-quality stainblocking primer and sealer to give a solid base to the paint color. For this project, I used KILZ 2 Latex (so it’s waterbased for easy cleanup) Multi-Surface Stainblocker.

On a clean, flat, protected surface, I started off by using a paint brush to apply the paint in all the grooves and crevices.  After smoothing it out, I followed with using a brush on all the flat areas.  See the 2 pictures below for more visual detail…

PRIMER PAINT, STEP 1

PRIMER PAINT, STEP 2

Cabinet primer complete.  22 more doors to go…

As I was priming the doors (on late nights + early mornings), I also painted the face frames of the kitchen.

Eek, this is a disastrous picture.  Much of our furniture was stored in the kitchen during the renovation, so it was a challenging area to work! You gotta do, what you gotta do, right?!?

Using similar steps as with the doors, I used a small foam roller brush to apply the primer to the face frames of the cabinets.  At the edges and in difficult spots, I used an angled brush.

A few hours later, here was the result.

Thankfully, with the primer coat, it does not have to be applied thick and only one coat is needed.  As long as the surface it covered, it’s good to move forward with PAINT!

Continuing with the face frames, I applied the semi-gloss paint in the same way… Roller brush for flat surfaces and an angled brush at edges and corners. To get a brushless look, it’s important to have a continuous stroke instead of starting and stopping partially on the surface.  Start at one end and continue the brush or roller to the other end.

I decided that two of the cabinets – the space above the hood and above the refrigerator – would be open cabinets that I wouldn’t install the doors back on to.  I chose to make these cabinets open display with cookbooks and baskets to bring some color and depth to the space.

This is the open cabinet that I painted inside.  For the cabinets with doors, I did not paint the interiors, I left them the clear maple.

Once the face frames were complete, this was the result…

It’s starting to look like something – I think. I hope.

Check out this quick 13 seconds video I created of me painting one of the cabinet door fronts.  This will give you a thorough look into how and when I use the brush and the roller on the face of the door.

And this is the completed cabinet.  Again, 22 more to go…

Aside from the cabinet doors and face frames, the soffit above the cabinets also needed major attention.  I removed the wallpaper border above the cabinets and found that the soffit was made using wood instead of sheetrock, which is typical.  Repair to the damaged areas wouldn’t be as easy as just adding spackle. Ugh.

After sanding and trying to create a smooth surface (as much as possible), I first primed the soffit bulkhead.

Then I painted the soffit using a semi-gloss white. In hindsight, I should have used a flat sheen since the semi-gloss finish shows every imperfection, but it’s fine and I’ve learned to live with it.

I also chose to reuse the exposed door hinges instead of buying new.  Using spray paint in a brushed chrome finish, I layed out the hinges on a protective surface (outside before the snow) and gave them a few coats.  Voila, new hinges and only a few dollars spent!

Once the face frames and doors were complete, they were ready to go back into place.  In many of the images above, the paint color looked so dark, but in natural light the deep blue hue can really be appreciated.

The paint color of the cabinets is: Valspar Mystified 4011-8

After many hours of love + attention, the cabinets were finished and ready to be hung with new hardware and repurposed hinges.

This is the result…

That’s a wrap for now…  I have a few more details for the DIY Kitchen Remodel coming up.  Stay tuned for the reveal of the overall space!

Serene + Sophisticated Master Bathroom Reveal

It’s been months in the making, but I am excited to share that my master bathroom renovation is complete.  I actually wrapped it up right before the new year hit, but I was awaiting a few accessory items (the finishing layers always make complete a space) + I really wanted to use the space on a daily basis before sharing my thoughts on the outcome.

Without further ado, here is our recently remodeled master bathroom…

Before getting to far ahead of myself and throwing loads of pictures at you (which I can’t wait to share), let’s remember where this bathroom started when I walked into a shell-of-a-house 7 years ago…

I don’t know who in their right mind would find this shade of purple to be pleasant each day, but it wasn’t for me.  If you can believe it, this space ended up being the last of all the rooms to be renovated (why did I wait so long?).

Finally in 2011, we gave the bathroom a DIY overhaul with a new floor (groutable luxury vinyl tile, tutorial here), new paint on the walls, new paint on the cabinet (faux glaze tutorial here), and new accessories (like the shower curtain made using window drapery panels, tutorial here).

DIY Master Bathroom renovation - JENNA BURGER DESIGN

What a huge difference. We loved it.

Fast forward 6 years, and we were in want + need of a total bathroom overhaul.  I envisioned a large shower, a longer + newer vanity + tile!

And voila, this is our new renovated bathroom

This is the vision board that I originally created…

Master Bathroom Renovation mood board - JENNA BURGER DESIGN

3 walls now are floor to ceiling tile and this space feels (and looks) like a high-end hotel bathroom with a serene spa feel.

If you know me, I adore color, but for this space, I stayed with lighter + brighter hues of neutrals and added contrast with a dark gray cabinet + layers of accessories in shades of blue.

The paint color for the space was tricky…  I actually had another color chosen but because the tile above the vanity is glossy & reflective, the tile took on an ugly color.  So I went to the light section of the color wheel and choose a soft blue.  It’s called  Sunday Sky by Valspar.

Sunday Sky by Valspar Because of the small amount of wall space, I decided to paint the ceiling a color as well and chose a slightly darker shade of blue (in the same color family as the walls).  It’s called Windblown Blue by Valspar.

The previous vanity was only 36″, but there was plenty of space to install a longer vanity.  We were able to increase the the size to this 48″ wide vanity that has two doors in the center and 3 drawers on each side (it looks like 4 drawers, but the bottom 2 are actually one taller compartment).

The additional 12″+ has been a game changer with the amount of usable counter space.  Yes, a double sink would have been glorious, but I’ll take what I can get!

Having drawers in the bathroom has also has been a welcomed change.  There is now so much room for the smaller bathroom items, as well as taller items like hairspray and nailpolish remover.

I lined the drawers with this cute contact paper that I snagged from Target for $3.  Just a small touch that makes a big difference.

The countertop for this vanity is a beautiful carrara marble.  Never great for the kitchen, but perfect for the bathroom!   This vanity came with the marble top + undermount sink in a square shape.

A 36″ round jute rug placed in the front of the vanity has been such a nice added touch for softness and texture.

The marble countertop arrived with 3 holes to accommodate this widespread sink faucet.  When possible, I always prefer separate holes for the faucet + handles versus being together on one late.  The look is higher end and appears like it was custom cut.

The frameless tile mirror above is a favorite of mine not only because it’s affordable at less than $100, but also because it’s a sophisticated, classic look + it can accommodate people of different heights since it tilts.

I have to talk about the tile…  The tile is what truly sets this bathroom apart and gives the space a custom, unique look!  The tile in the shower space is a 4 x 12 white subway tile and I added a 12″ high band about 3′ high above the floor, which continues to the ceiling on the wall of the vanity.

The accent mosaic tile (which comes on a 12″ x 12″ mesh sheet backing) is made of a variety of ceramic + natural stones in varying shades of neutrals.  It is such a beautiful backdrop to the vanity and is so dramatic, but not in an overwhelming way, when you enter the space.

As you make your way around the space, the window adorns a new roman shade made by my go-to-fabricator Tonic Living.  I work with them a lot on client projects and they create such gorgeous window treatments.  This fabric just truly captures everything that I wanted this bathroom to evoke.

One large component of this bathroom remodel was the removal of the existing tub and creating a shower space in it’s place.

This renovation was part DIY and part highered out to a contractor.  There were areas (mainly plumbing) that was beyond our skillset to take on, so calling in a contractor was a must.  Once he removed the existing shower unit, he installed a new shower pan.  We installed the tile on the walls, and then he returned and installed the new shower enclosure.

>>> Check out more here on how the walls were tiled

Transitioning from a tub to a shower left us with one challenge.  The shower pan was 2″ narrower than the tub so there was a gap between the floor ended and the shower pan edge.  What to do?  What to do?  Using a few extra mosaic pieces, I filled in the gap, and no one will ever know – wink, wink…

One moment it was a problem, the next a simple resolution was discovered!

I am really loving this shower door because it eliminates the difficulties of a typical swinging shower door (they swing into the shower so the placement for the shower fittings needs to be configured properly) + the design of it is so modern + minimal.

The one panel is stationery (left side in the picture above) and the panel with the handle is operable. The wheels seamlessly roll on the bar above similar to a rolling barn door.

In lieu of a bench or built-in niche for shampoo (something I would have loved, but beyond my skillset + budget), I found a petite teak bench perfect for sitting and/or holding various shower necessities.

To finish off the tile where the tile meets the wall on the shower fittings side, I added a 3×6 bullnose tile in a vertical layout.  With the one side of the tile being curved, it transitions beautifully into the wall.

The layout of this space is somewhat tricky because there is an angled wall that is too large to leave bare, but too small to add a piece of furniture that is oversized. When I was scouring for accessories, I knew what I wanted, but couldn’t find anything that was just right + within my budget.  In the end, I found this gorgeous lucite + leather (white) stool.  I just couldn’t leave it.

I knew I had to pair it with a simple + minimal vanity.  Shopping came to a halt because I decided to build the simple vanity that I envisioned.

I used 2 x 3 for the 4 legs + 1 x 4 for the apron surround + 1/4″ thick plywood for the top, then painted it a color similar to the ceiling.  It’s the perfect size + scale for the space and is the ideal spot for perfumes, cotton balls, q tips, etc…

All the beautiful artwork in the bathroom is from Minted.com.  They are a fabulous source for fine art + limited edition prints at an affordable price.

One of the most frequent inquiries I get on the blog is about the towel bars mounted on the back of the door.  The bathroom space is decent, but there is no perfect place for towel bars, so the existing back-of-the-door-towel-bars remained.

>>> Check out this post on How-To Hang a Towel Bar on a Hollow Core Door

Like all renovations, this project came with it’s hurdles + challenges, but nothing that couldn’t be overcome with thinking outside the box and a bit of patience.  As with all projects, there is a first for everything and with each completed endeavour, I take away something new, which builds my skillset + confidence.  At the same time, I know when to turn to others and call in the pros.

Master Bathroom Renovation: DEMO!

Hi All!

Last I left you, I mentioned we were about to undergo a major renovation of the master bathroom. It was a space that got a DIY makeover a few years back, but with wear + tear it was time for an overhaul.

As much as I adore color, I could only image this new bathroom to be soft + serene and clean + calm. The overall aesthetic will be based more on texture rather than color. Plus layers will add an important element to give the overall space contract + depth.

Just to share a reminder of the ‘before’ space…

Master Bathroom 'BEFORE' the renovation, JENNA BURGER DESIGN

The morning of demo day, I snapped the picture above of the bathroom, and in no time the contractors got to work…

Demo Day for the Master Bathroom renovation, JENNA BURGER DESIGN

From the tub to the vanity to the toilet, everything was ripped out!

As I mentioned in my last post, this renovation is a dual endeavour.  Due lack of time + components outside our skill set, we are taking on some areas of the renovation, while other areas will be performed by a contractor.  As I previously said, I don’t want to be without a bathroom for months AND I want to stay sane (somewhat).

The contractors are tackling the major areas including demo + installing the main components – shower pan + fittings, toilet, vanity + faucet.

DAY ONE

On the first day, the three-man crew removed the existing pre-fab tub, the sheetrock above the tub, the toilet, and the vanity.  It’s a small space, but by lunch time, the space was cleared out…

Instead of installing a new tub, we decided to use the 30″ x 60″ outcove for a shower.  After the tub + sheetrock was removed, the space was ready for the new shower pan.  For the new tile to adhere to, hardiboard (also known as cement board or backerboard) was installed.

Sheetrock is still a great product for the walls and ceiling of a bathroom, just not in the tub/shower area. Cement board is made with actual cement + a firberglass mesh exterior, so it’s waterproof and won’t deteriorate over time when/if it comes in contact with water.

Additionally, the new vanity that I chose is 48″ whereas the existing is 36″… I’m gaining 12″ of counterspace – I’m over the moon! Because of this change, the electrical wiring for the light needs to be moved so it will be centered on the new 48″ space.

By days end, this was the result…

Check out the purple wall color that was behind the toilet…  it was from before we renovated the last bathroom…  Gosh that color is ghastly and I was hoping to never see it again, ha.

DAY TWO

On the second day of renovation, the new shower pan was installed and the remainder of the space got prepped for tile.  After another day’s work, it was my turn to step in to install the tile.

Here’s a peak of how the finished cement board looks upon installation with the new shower pan…

It’s ready for me to tile!

I gotta get back to tiling…

Oh, and I’m still deciding on the accent tile.  Any suggestions?  What do you like best??

Master Bathroom Renovation: Plan + Mood Board

It’s been quite some time – about a year – since we tackled a full-on big room renovation.  To put it plain + simple, the kitchen remodel last Fall just wiped me out… and we didn’t even do too much on our own. When it was done, I was desperate for a break.  Then life got busy. Sports. Work. School. Appointments. You know the drill…  But when this past Summer turned into Fall and the kids were back to school and a everyday routine was once again established, I was finally feeling the itch to get my hands dirty… again.

If you remember back about 4-1/2 years ago, one of the last spaces in our home to get attention after moving in was the master bathroom.  The walls were a horrendous purple/pink hue with dated + dusty brass accents.  It all had to go…

Master Bathroom 'before' renovation - JENNA BURGER DESIGN

…but it didn’t all go.

With a few cans of paint, I transformed the walls, the trim, and the cabinet with a whole new color palette. Then to finish it, I laid a new floor using luxury vinyl tile, hung a new mirror, and changed the light. A few hundred dollars later, and the space was completely transformed… for the most part.

And if you can believe it, the renovated space even ended up in a national publication, Kitchen + Bath makeovers, Fall/Winter 2014

Better Homes & Garden Kitchen + Bath Makeover magazine - SAS Interiors Kitchen and Master Bath feature

But after 4 years of using the bathroom day in + day out, it needed a makeover. A real makeover. The pre-fab tub was drear and the builder-grade cabinet had seen it’s life span.

I envisioned Carrara. White. Clean. Fresh. Fun…

…And created a vision board.

Master Bathroom Renovation mood board - JENNA BURGER DESIGN

eek!  It’s all so pretty and fabulous.

Sophisticated, but casual.

Elegant, but inviting.

I am really excited about this new bathroom. You know me, I adore a striking + bold color, but for this space, I need it to feel tranquil and serene.  With being pulled in 92 directions each day, I want to start off and end each precious day in a calming way.

Thanks to my friends at Lowe’s, who I have worked with for years, for choosing to partner with me on this project to create an inviting and peaceful place.

Here is what I have planned…

> The tub will be changing from a pre-fab bathtub to a shower with a frameless rolling glass door

> New Tile will be added from floor to ceiling in the tub space and will continue on the entire wall of the vanity

> The main tile will be 4 x 12 white subway with an accent glass/natural mosaic tile

> The walls will be painted a light mint green hue

> The 36″ vanity will be replaced with a 48″ vanity in a dark gray finish to give contrast and a white cararra countertop will be added to give a finished luxury look

> To finish the space, artwork and a fabric window valance in hues of blue will add pattern and color

These are the specific items I plan to use (and are shown in the mood board above):

Vanity
Toilet
Shower Door
Main Subway Tile
Glass Mosaic Tile
Sconce
Mirror
Artwork
Fabric Valance

This is the overall layout plan + elevations that I created:

DIY + Calling in the PROS!

This bathroom renovation, like the last one I tackled, isn’t going to be a devoted do-it-yourself project.  For 2 reasons.  One, I don’t want to be without a bathroom for months AND I want to stay somewhat sane. Two, other than the basics, the Mister & I don’t know much about plumbing and leave those things to the experts.

As with the previous bathroom renovation, we worked with a contractor to demo the bathroom and install the major components.  What is on our list to tackle for this renovation is: tile installation (there’s A LOT of tile!), paint, baseboard, installing the light, installing the accessories, hanging artwork, etc.

By splitting up a project with tackling some of it on our own and calling in the pros where needed, we’ll save money AND our sanity (i hope)!

There you have it… for now.

Demo has begun.  Wish me luck.  I’ll need it 😉

House Tour 2016

home tour

I’ve been blogging a long time – almost 6 years to be exact.

Over this half decade, our home has changed, evolved, and become a place that is filled with meaning + reflects who we are & where we’ve been. And along the way, there hasn’t been a single surface that’s gone untouched – sometimes twice (or more).

Since it’s been several years (and a whole lotta projects + room renovations later), I thought it was time to share an updated HOUSE TOUR of our humble abode!

Last year was a big year with so many updates. We tackled the kids/hall bath, the living room, and THE KITCHEN, which completely changed the look and feel of our home.

Let’s get to it. Grab a cup of something-good.

WELCOME

Come on in.

The entrance way to a home, is what I believe, sets the tone for what’s to come, so it’s such a delight to surround our home in nature’s beauty.

The entry into our home has been a labor of love (and at times, hate) for many years. From the earlier days of a rickety railing and overgrown shrubs, to the current days beautifully landscaped + open and colorful front porch, this is what we call our entryway…

Speaking of kitchen, this is the most recently renovated room in the house. And since the transformation, I truly feel that our home is complete. It finally reflects our aesthetic + style. The remodel process wasn’t easy. At times it felt like forever and was even a bit painful at moments, but 100000% worth it. If you are going to update a room in your home, it has to be the kitchen.

Having one open space, makes our home feel so much larger than it really is.

Continuing from the dining room, there is one step down into the living room. Because of the vaulted ceilings with skylights, this space always feels so light + bright. When the time came last year to give this room a revamp, I knew it could handle + needed a dynamic dark color. Everyone thought I was crazy for choosing a black paint color, but once it was complete and the lighter layers were brought in, the space resulted exactly how I envisioned.

MASTER BEDROOM

A space that has forever been in transition (and is still a work in progress). Somehow this room gets neglected often and even though it looks pulled together here, it rarely looks like this (I’m so bad at taking the time to make our bed). Just like my office, this space has a huge amount of light filtering through. The windows are amazing.

The aesthetic in this room is more serene than the rest of the house. Comparably to the other spaces, it seemed less dramatic, until a few years back when I added pops of citrine + plum! The space is still very serene and has an overall quiet palette of whites, but pops of color bring in the added dimension and depth it needed to pop.

Anyway, similar to the bedroom, the master bathroom is another quiet space accented with shades of blue. From the before color, you’ll know why this hue was chosen.

Similar to most of the spaces in my home, the master bathroom was a full-on DIY endeavour. From the cabinet to the floor to the mirror to the shower curtain, this space was entirely transformed using my two hands (and a bit of the Misters, gotta give him credit. He’s my can you help me? sâvior)!

The room that my 2 daughters share has had quite the transformation over the years starting as a nursery, then getting revamped to a big girl room with a 3-in-1 play tent. Once baby #3 (our littlest lady) came along, a new wall color was added and changes were made to accommodate a nursery nook.

This is kind of how it looks today minus that the beige wall which was recently revamped with a new mint-colored hue

His room has had many evolutions over the years since we moved in when he was 4 and now he’s 10.

Since we don’t have a guest room, having an extra bed was nice, but it was rarely used so in his current revamped room, he only has one twin bed. His before room, which is an untraditional blue-for-boy was a fun and creative space. DIY Rolling Door Hardware using Plumbing Pipe

There are some do-it-yourself projects that are wham-bam-done and then there are those DIY creations that seem to take as long as building a house…

Well I just wrapped up a fantastic, in my eyes, DIY project but it didn’t come without a hundred hurdles along the way.  BUT we – yes, the Mister lent a hand for this one – kept chugging along and made it to the end.

My latest + greatest project?  A rolling door with DIY hardware using plumbing pipe.  The popularity of rolling doors continues and even though I’m not in favor of following every trend, adding a door of this style was the only solution for our master closet.

The door to the closet was removed a few years back when revamping the space to maximize on shelf area.  Since then there’s been no door…  Solution?  A rolling door to give privacy + a splash of color.

The result of this challenging, but rewarding result…

Let me explain where the hurdles + difficulties arose with this project…

I had anticipated using a reclaimed door, so the hunt was on.  After scouring local thrift stores + ‘junk’ spots, I found the perfect door with the 29″ width that I needed. Brought the door home. Went to sand it but it was an old door, and we assumed it was lead paint.  So we stripped the door using a liquid stripper.  It didn’t work. Hours spent + poor results = a very frustrated DIYer.  We painted over the door to seal it.  Went to hang it and the door was 6″ TOO SHORT.  The salvaged door I spent hours prepping couldn’t be used – UGH.  In the end we used the hinged door that was originally used for this opening.  The width is not ideal, but it works.

Let’s move forward with the tutorial.  There are a lot of parts, so let’s dive in…

MATERIALS NEEDED

1 – Flange (qty 2)

2 – 3/4″ x 1″ Black Steel Nipple Fitting (qty 2)

3 – 3/4″ Elbow (qty 2)

4 – 3/4″ Black Iron Pipe – can be cut to size (qty 1)

5 – 3/4″ Black Iron Tee (qty 2)

6 – 3/4″ x 1/2″ Black Steel Nipple Fitting (qty2)

7 – Casters (qty 2)

8 – Black Iron Reducing Coupling (qty 2)

> Screws + anchors (if there are no studs)

> Drill

> Door to your liking

> Handle – plumbing pipe handle is made with (2) flanges + (2) elbows + (1) 12″ L x 1/2″ W pipe

These *should* be all the hardware that is needed, but of course, every project / condition is different.  In my initial trip to Lowe’s for the supplies, I got all of the above with the exception of the Reducing Coupling part.  That was needed because the pipe needed to be reduced from 3/4″ to 1/2″ to fit in the door…

I shopped for all the plumbing parts at my local Lowe’s.  Using their cutting machine, they were able to cut the long pipe to fit my exact length.  For large plumbing pipe projects like a bookcase, this is a great source.

DIY ROLLING DOOR HARDWARE TUTORIAL

1 To start off, I laid out all of the parts for the rolling door track.

DIY: Rolling door hardware using plumbing pipe. Get the look + function of a rolling door for about $60. Custom size to fit your space. Tutorial by www.JennaBurger.com

2 Then I connected the pipes together. Before threading pipe to pipe, it’s best to use a pipe lubricant to make the connection easier + smoother.

DIY: Rolling door hardware using plumbing pipe. Get the look + function of a rolling door for about $60. Custom size to fit your space. Tutorial by www.JennaBurger.com

Note, connecting the pipes can be slightly challenging.  I anticipated screwing each connection the entire way so no threading would be exposed.  That is impossible.  A section of the pipe showing the threading will be exposed.  Account for that when taking measurements.

DIY: Rolling door hardware using plumbing pipe. Get the look + function of a rolling door for about $60. Custom size to fit your space. Tutorial by www.JennaBurger.com

3 The plumbing pipes didn’t match in color, so to give them a unified look, I spray painted the track using a flat black color.

DIY: Rolling door hardware using plumbing pipe. Get the look + function of a rolling door for about $60. Custom size to fit your space. Tutorial by www.JennaBurger.com

4 As I mentioned above, I ended up using the door that was previously hinged.  I added two caster wheels to the bottom of the door.

WHY? Plumbing pipe will bend under tension. If the door was hung from the pipe with no wheels support, the pipe would bend in time.  The wheels support the door and the track keeps the door in place.

DIY: Rolling door hardware using plumbing pipe. Get the look + function of a rolling door for about $60. Custom size to fit your space. Tutorial by www.JennaBurger.com

5 (2) Holes were drilled at the top of the door for which the nipple fittings will fit into.

DIY: Rolling door hardware using plumbing pipe. Get the look + function of a rolling door for about $60. Custom size to fit your space. Tutorial by www.JennaBurger.com

6 With the casters installed on the bottom + the holes drilled on the top, I got the door in position and measured out where the plumbing pipe track should be installed.

DIY: Rolling door hardware using plumbing pipe. Get the look + function of a rolling door for about $60. Custom size to fit your space. Tutorial by www.JennaBurger.com

7 Upon measuring and marking the wall (sorry, no pictures, all hands on deck), we were set to install the plumbing pipe.  Using 1.5″ long screws (no anchors needed because we drilled into a stud) we installed the (2) flanges to the wall.

DIY: Rolling door hardware using plumbing pipe. Get the look + function of a rolling door for about $60. Custom size to fit your space. Tutorial by www.JennaBurger.com

The nipple fittings held on by the tee fittings slide into the holes in the top of the door.  The drilled holes are just slightly larger than the nipples so they fit snug, BUT the door can easily come out any time.

DIY: Rolling door hardware using plumbing pipe. Get the look + function of a rolling door for about $60. Custom size to fit your space. Tutorial by www.JennaBurger.com

The reducing coupling fitting wasn’t originally planned for.  That was a part we added later because the 3/4″ nipple fitting (that comes out of the tee fitting) was too large to fit into a hole in the top of the door. This reducing coupling fitting allows the transition from a 3/4″ nipple fitting to a 1/2″ nipple fitting.

DIY: Rolling door hardware using plumbing pipe. Get the look + function of a rolling door for about $60. Custom size to fit your space. Tutorial by www.JennaBurger.com

8 Once the track + door were place, I painted it a fun + vibrant green hue – it ties with the same color used for the DIY chalk paint desk transformation.  The color is Benjamin Moore Martini Olive CSP-890, which I had color matched at Lowe’s using Valspar Signature Paint.

DIY: Rolling door hardware using plumbing pipe. Get the look + function of a rolling door for about $60. Custom size to fit your space. Tutorial by www.JennaBurger.com

9 I also painted the screws that hold the track using black paint.

DIY: Rolling door hardware using plumbing pipe. Get the look + function of a rolling door for about $60. Custom size to fit your space. Tutorial by www.JennaBurger.com

10 Once the I painted the door face with 2 coats of paint, I added a door handle using plumbing pipe parts.

DIY: Rolling door hardware using plumbing pipe. Get the look + function of a rolling door for about $60. Custom size to fit your space. Tutorial by www.JennaBurger.com

And finally, finally, finally, it was COMPLETE!  Phew, it took a village to get this project done…

With any DIY project there is a learning curve and hopefully if you tackle this project, it’ll be smoother sailing with the kinks ironed out from my experience.

THE RESULT

Something to note, this is a DIY track with parts that are metal on metal.  The door will go back and forth, but not with ease as a typical rolling door track.  When I first installed the track, it was very difficult to “slide” the door – another hurdle – but I added a lot of lubricant (actually I used petroleum jelly) to the long pole.  Adding the lubricant has made moving the door a lot easier.

That being said, this DIY track is a whole lot less expensive than true rolling door hardware, BUT I wouldn’t use it for areas that need privacy with high-traffic use multiple times a day. For us, this is DIY door is perfect for the master closet since most of the time it’s left open.  As a main hall closet, maybe not so much.

This DIY rolling door came together in part with the tutorial by Kristi @ Addicted 2 Decorating+ some sleuthy thinking and planning on my part for how to make it work for this space.  Because of the limited wall area, a standard track was too big, so without going custom, this was the only solution.

In the end, I love the result.  I’ll be honest though, it didn’t come without a few hiccups and flaws, but it absolutely suits the purpose for the setting.

It’s definitely been nice to get some privacy – on a rare occasion – and see a pop of color when entering into the room.

AND on the random days when I don’t want to clean up the closet, I just close the door…

While I was working on the closet, I got a bit sidetracked and gave it a mini-makeover.  Some new organizational items – hooks + bins – made all the difference to jazz this space up.

Lowe’s has these awesome new bins that are faux leather.  I feel in love when I saw them.  They are oversized too (13″ x 13″), so they hold alot. They’re perfect for holding scarves, small bags, and summer flip flops.

Despite my challenges, the result of this project for the price is a great one.  Even though it resulted in my grays than I hoped, it was worth the few tears to achieve the style + function + look I was hoping for, and at the end of the day that’s what I call a success!

Simple Spring Wreath

I’m ready for spring.

Winter – thankfully – didn’t hit us hard this year in the North Country of NY, but I’m still ready for warm + sunny weather to once again appear.

To welcome the coming change of season, I wanted to adorn my door with something new. Typically when April hits, I change over the front porch for Spring and kick-off-the-season by hanging my beloved forsythia wreath. This year I wanted something new…

The past weeks have been incredibly busy with little spare time to create + DIY, but last weekend, I squeezed in a few quiet moments to make a new wreath.

Quick + Simple, AND pretty.  A new wreath to adorn my door…

SPRING WREATH: A simple + easy 10-minute creation to adorn the front door. It couldn't be easier to make and a lot less expensive than buying. Easy-to-follow tutorial @ www.JennaBurger.com

I adore my yellow forsythia wreath – my go to for Spring – but I was wanting something lighter + brighter to give contrast to the apple green painted front door.

After food shopping last week, I popped into AC Moore and saw so many vibrant + colorful faux flowers for Spring.  Their whole collection was on sale, so I picked up 3 bunches – about $15 total – in soft colors of white, greens, and a pop of pink.

I was excited to get started…

TUTORIAL FOR A SIMPLE 10-MINUTE SPRING WREATH

I started off with an 18″ grapevine wreath that I had on hand – but you can find them at most craft stores (even Walmart has them) for around $5.

Using snips, I broke apart the flower cluster and was left with individual stems, which gives the flexibility + freedom to place the stems where they look best to give a real-looking result.

Well unfortunately I think I jinxed myself.  Spring was on it’s way, but over the coming days it’s supposed to feel like winter again.  Ugh.  Soon.  I know it’ll be here soon.

For now, this new wreath will keep me going to send Spring vibes our way.

Modern, Rustic Teen Room + DIY Pallet Wall Tutorial

Hey There! Hope you’re having a great week.

Today, I’m sharing the details of another teen bedroom that I just finished up. The other day I shared the first of the 3 teen rooms (all siblings) and you all were in love. Many of you chimed in and said “this is for a teen? I want this room!” With splashes of pink + shades of gray, it was a winner young OR old. And that geometric rug – you all were gaga over it. See more of that space > here.

On to this new teen room reveal…

As I mentioned the other day, I had a neighbor reach out about remodeling their 3 teens bedrooms. I thought a new splash of paint + a few new throw pillows and it’d be done. Nope! This was an entire makeover from top to bottom for each room. These awesome parents wanted to put the time + money into creating a space that truly reflected each of their blooming personalities. Using some old, adding in quite a bit of new, and DIYing a few fun projects, these room got a total revamp.

WELCOME TO BEDROOM 2

Let’s dissect the details of this teen space with a new rustic pallet focal wall layered with vibrant geometric patterns + bold colors

Teen Room Revamp: A pallet wall was added to the focal / bed wall and geometric patterns in bold colors were layered in. Check out more of this space + SOURCES @ www.JennaBurger.com

The process of revamping each room was fairly similar to how I typically work with clients, yet it was multipled by 3. Three unique personalities. Three styles. Three visions. Not having worked 1-on-1 with a teen before, I wasn’t sure how it was going to pan out, but they came prepared with a plan.

And I was able to execute this for his new pad…

and the floor plan…

This specific teen – a boy – was less decisive about the design direction, so other than a few specifics, I had free rein. I wanted to achieve a modern, but worn aesthetic and as a starting point, I was feeling wood had to be introduced!

A pallet wall?

Would they go for it?

I would do a pallet wall in my house, but how could I “sell” the idea to a client??

Sold. They loved the idea – the teen AND the parents!

How fabulous does it look as a feature wall?!

After creating the floor plan + vision board (seen above) for each of the teen rooms, I sent them off with a shopping list + tutorials. On their own, they took on the task of gathering pallets, dismantling each pallet, then sanding + cleaning each board. It was a lot of work, but in the end, the project cost nothing AND they made it a family project.

Here is a recap of the process to making the pallet wall…

DO -IT-YOURSELF PALLET WALL

DIY Tutorial for how-to build a pallet wall to create a rustic + warm feel to a space. Lots of labor BUT FREE! Tutorial @ www.JennaBurger.com

TUTORIAL

1 Find pallets

> For this 10′ wide x 8′ wall, about 100 planks were used. That breaks down to approximately 15 pallets (depending on the size + usability of planks per each pallet)

> I scour the back of my local Lowe’s for used pallets that they’ve given permission to take. Pallet projects are so popular, that some places are selling them, but I would try to find free before paying…

Dismantel the pallets

> Check out this tutorial for tips on dismantling a pallet

> When you have a pile of boards, clean them off with a damp cloth + sand the surface – an orbital sander is easiest and be sure to wear a face mask!

2Lay it out

> Avoid possible mistakes by laying out the wall on the floor BEFORE installing. Because the planks are of varying sizes and widths, this will help determine what works best + looks best when installed on the wall.

3Cut the boards

> Using a powered miter saw, cut the planks to size to fit the wall space.

4Install the boards

> Starting at the ceiling plane, position the planks on the wall and using a nailgun, nail the boards to the wall. This process should be fairly fast since the boards have already been laid out + positioned how you want them to look. Of course, adjustments may need to be made along the way.

> After each row, take a step back to the opposite side of the space to be sure the planks are fairly level. A long level might also be useful to check if the boards are straight, but your eyes should be enough.

5Finish it

> Row by row, make your way down the wall until you’ve reached the floor.

6  Step back

> Step back and enjoy your hard work. This DIY project isn’t difficult, nor expensive, but it’s time consuming.

> A helper isn’t required, but will surely make it easier!

> Layer the beautiful new wall with other rustic accents or contrasting decor as I did with colorful geometric patterns.

Kitchen Renovation: REVEAL + Resources

KITCHEN MAKEOVER REVEAL: before and after kitchen renovation with white & gray cabinets, open shelving, subway tile backsplash, quartz countertops, and layers of color. This kitchen is gorgeous! Check out the entire renovation process @ www.JennaBurger.com

In less than a month, we’ll be living in our home 6 years.  6 years. The fastest 6 of my life. More than double the time of any place we’ve lived before.

We moved here as a family of 3 and now we’re a family of 5 + a cute white little kitty. Life has changed so much and as much as our family + lives have evolved, so has the house we stepped in to – and almost walked away from – 6 years ago.

The shell that was a vacant house, has been transformed into a home.  A chaotic, crazy, bustling HOME.  Every surface has been touched.  Walls has been repainted + wallpapered (some a few times over).  Floors have been recarpeted + retiled.  And most importantly our home is now adorned with key elements that show who we are, what we love, and where we’ve been. Our mark has been made.

The kitchen, the hub of our new house in 2010 seemed fine.  The cabinets were in fine shape, the counters weren’t pretty but functional.  A few months in, we changed the hardware + the sink, and called it done.

Until…  2 years later and I was itching to freshen it up.  A $300 kitchen revamp + new appliances left us happy campers.  We were in love.  The do-it-yourself upgrade on a budget was perfect.  At that moment it reflected us.

In the 3 year time gap from then to now, our lives have turned upside down – all for the good!  When we bought our home, we had just came off a really rough patch with the economy affecting our jobs.

Thankfully things have changed a lot…

Fast forward… the Misters job has been stable & growing + I’ve been able to continue expanding my blog + business – designing LOTS of other peoples homes.  Life has been good. Real good.  And truly grateful.  And the time had come for US to get the kitchen of our dreams.  It was finally our turn. Surreal, but true.  I wanted – and needed – a gourmet kitchen of my own.  And here it is.  Finally complete and still pinching myself with excitement.

WELCOME to our kitchen

This kitchen could not have been possible without the assistance + backing from my friends at Lowe’s, Kraftmaid, and Frigidaire.  I’ve collaborated with Lowe’s countless times over the years and I am blessed that they never ask questions and always believe.  I strive to execute outside-of-the-box creations which in turn inspires you, my amazing & dedicated readers.  That’s what I’m here for. That’s what I do… Inspire. And that’s what I hope the take away is with the new kitchen space I designed.

Enough chit-chat, come on in…

Where to begin, is the question…

The inspiration for the color palette came from a piece of art.  I snagged this canvas from Ikea last year and at the time it was meant for the living room, which I had been in the process of remodeling. I loved the white background layered with bold pops of color – yellow, blue, raspberry, green, turquoise.

I was drawn to it’s simplicity, yet intricate focus on detail.  And that’s exactly the vision I wanted the kitchen to evoke – clean, simple, and BOLD.

This was the mood board I created…

Kitchen Design Board - Plan of Action

… And months later, I feel I’ve achieved just that.  I’m content.  This new kitchen truly evokes everything I am and everything my style is.

From edge to edge, here it is…

The cabinetry in the new kitchen is by Kraftmaid, one of several cabinet companies displayed at Lowe’s.  I chose the Kraftmaid line of cabinets for a range of reasons. Not only does Kraftmaid have an extensive selection of cabinet styles + colors, their attention to detail is exquisite, as well as the craftmanship of their product.  When I started the design process for this renovation, I was quite impressed with all the ‘bells & whistles’ that they offer (many of which come standard with their cabinetry) + the variety of storage solutions they offer.

More on the details of the kitchen + cabinetry in a post coming soon.

When the process of the remodel began, the intention was to remove the soffit above the upper cabinet and the soffit above the window.  Unbeknownst to us in the beginning stages, the soffit above the window is a beam that is holding up the back of the house and couldn’t be removed – obviously.  What we WERE able to do was have a higher ceiling in the window section, which allowed the new subway tile to continue up and around the entire window, which really heightens the space.

Instead of having a lower cabinet under the soffit, it was decided that open shelves would be best – for aesthetics + function.

I love the open + airy feel that the 10″ deep  thick shelves give to this section of the kitchen.  Plus the 3″ thick shelves are ultra beafy (I confirmed this many times with the contractor) so they hold all the large dishes + small plates and bowls.  Super easy to access and grab.

On the other side of the window, the left side, there are two additional shelves with decorative corbels.  These shelves are only about 7″ deep and can’t hold as much weight, so they’re perfect for glasses + smaller light-weight bowls.  Again, so easy to access.

As we continue around the kitchen, the range + exposed hood are flanked by 2 closed upper cabinets that now are full height to the ceiling and hold the glasses (left cabinet) and pantry food (right cabinet).

Continuing the subway tile backsplash up the wall behind the hood was an absolute.  Again, another way to heighten the overall space and not have the wall start / stop at a certain point.

In the new kitchen, the refrigerator moved about 18″ to the left to create a full depth pantry that touches the side wall.  Ahhh, it’s wonderful.  Singing-from-the-hilltops incredible!  I love it because there is so much storage.

The 24″ deep pantry is the same depth as the refrigerator + cabinet above and holds some of the small appliances like the coffee maker + toaster.  The coffee maker sits on a roll-out shelf and there is an outlet in the cabinet back, which makes mornings so easy for brewing our cup of joe.

Also in the bank of pantry cabinets is a charging station for our various electronics including the cell phones, ipads, etc.  Another outlet was installed for these components in the back of the cabinet and a grommet was drilled in the back of the drawer for the wires to pull through.

Having a ‘home’ for all these kitchen essentials has really cleared off the counters to leave open space for what a kitchen is really used for… cooking.

Talking about cooking, I basically prep + do everything for our meals on the island.  The Island.  The huge island that I always dreamed of and still can’t believe I have.

It’s wonderful.

The Kraftmaid cabinetry on the perimeter cabinets is Dove White and on the island is a deep + rich grey/blue hue called Greyloft. Never having an island before, I didn’t know what to do with myself when it was installed.  It provides so much storage and in the island is also where the microwave now sits.

On the far end of the island that faces the living room, I chose to have open shelves instead of closed cabinetry.  I thought it would be the perfect spot for my many cookbooks + basket storage for dishclothes, cloth napkins, etc.

Having open shelving also allows the ability to bring color into the kitchen.  Instead of the solid, one-tone look of cabinets, open shelving adds depth and a way to introduce color.

Another way to bring in color amongst the sea of white was on the walls.  The old kitchen paint color was yellow and for the new wall paint I chose a light gray.  Wrong choice.  In the end, I went back to yellow, but this time the sunshine yellow color is a completely different hue – much more lighter & brighter.

And check out the colorful + bold wallpaper in the dining room. It adds a gorgeous focal point to the overall open space.

The marble-looking countertops are quartz and truly complete the clean + simple aesthetic of the kitchen.

And let me not forget to discuss the lighting…

I am a major light-aholic!  Lighting is SO IMPORTANT.  Lighting makes a statement and with my home, I wasn’t going to skimp.

Go Big or Go Home!

Being completely honest, I had a difficult time choosing the right lighting.  With the cabinetry hardware being polished nickel, I questioned the lighting style + finish.  In the end, I chose these amazing matte black dome style pendants from Rejuvenation for over the island.

And for the light above the sink, I decided on this open style glass pendant from Shades of Light.

They are both amazing, compliment each other perfectly, and overall I am in love with the many different finishes in this kitchen.

This has been a strenuous – what big renovation isn’t? – but wonderful renovation process.  I won’t lie, I’m glad it’s DONE, but I can’t ask for anything better. And that is a project labeled SUCCESS.
