Blue Bohemian Bedroom

Hey there. Goodness, it’s been a while (many of my blog posts seem to start with similar wording. I guess time isn’t always on my side…)

Anyway, I finally snapped some pictures of the master bedroom (there’s really nothing ‘master’ or grand about it though) and I’m excited to give you a peek.

To take a step back to look at where it started, here is the space before…

The space is a step back in size from the bedroom in our previous home.  We’ve had to cut out a couple pieces of furniture, which I was fine with – paring down is refreshing for the soul.  The most challenging part has been the closet space.  Or should I say, lack of closet space. We went from a sizeable, nicely organized walk-in closet to a one-wall closet.  BUT again, it’s been enlightening to release unnecessary, unused items, and to pare down to the essentials. Enough on that (for now). Let’s get to the tour.

The space is about 14′ x 14′ with 2 windows.  The bed is positioned on a wall with one of the windows, so it is off-centered on the overall space.  This is actually a benefit as it creates more open floor space when you walk into the room.  The upholstered bed, from Crate and Barrel, has moved several times with us from house to house. Because of the light, cream-colored fabric, the bed is simple and classic so it works in any space and mostly with any style bedding.

Here is a look back at the bedroom in our previous home.

As you’ll see, the nightstand is the same – it provides wonderful storage – and the chaise has remained as well – a staple for when one of the kids comes traipsing in during the middle of the night.  I did freshen up the nightstands with new crystal-like knobs (similar to these).

For the bedroom in our current house, I wanted to steer away from warmer tones (brown hues) like in our last home, so I chose a beautiful + deep dusty blue.  It’s a mix between turquoise and colonial blue with slight undertones of green.  The color is Benjamin Moore Montpelier AF-555

The striped coral + turquoise bedding is also new and it’s from the bohemian-style Opalhouse line at Target.  I love how fun and unexpected it is with the oversized pom poms at the edges.  Inexpensive quilts or duvets are easy to switch out and are a great way to update a look of a bedroom without breaking the bank!

The pillows that adorn the bed seem to go with everything.  Even though they are vibrant colors – bold green and deep plum – all the bedding that I’ve paired them with have complimented well.

To lighten + brighten the space, I ditched the previously darker rug and chose to ground the bed with a new, neutral bohemian tribal area rug.

As you continue around the room, the chaise that we bought a lifetime ago from Crate and Barrel (similar to this chaise) sits to the right of the bed on the other side of the nightstand.

The window treatments are a loose, but structured straight valance.  I made the valances using leftover Robert Allen fabric and they are hung right below the ceiling using a heavy duty metal curtain rod.

Above, I’ve hung family photos and pretty hooks for hanging scarves, hats, and bags.  With our lack of closet storage, I’ve tried to make good use of the walls in an aesthetically pretty AND functional way!

If you’ve been a follower of JBD for a long time, you may remember when I made this wedding lyric pillow for Valentine’s Day – I’m such a romantic…

On the other side of the room, opposite the bed, sits a large-scale dresser.  When we moved, I was planning on replacing this with a smaller scale dresser, but with the amount of storage it provides (again, lack of closet space), I couldn’t let it go.

Art that we love and/or have collected from traveling is arranged in a collage above the dresser and surrounds (and distracts) from the TV that sits on the dresser. I shared a step-by-step post a while back on creating a photo gallery similar to this.

Let’s talk about lighting (and ceiling fans)…

We went from central air in our previous home to without (yes, this heatwave has been brutal), so when we were making updates to the house after the purchase we updated all the ceiling fans.  The kids all have this modern fan, but for our bedroom, we chose something a little more ornate and pretty.  The ceiling fan is modern with black blades, but the light is concealed with a pretty drumshade of crystal finial.

Also being cognizant of space, instead of table lamps on the nightstands, I chose a simple modern plug-in sconce.  We adore them. They provide the perfect amount of task lighting without being cumbersome.  After having them for a few days, we unexpectedly realized that the cover rotates to provide indirect lighting. Check it out…

And that’s a wrap.  Thanks for taking a tour of our serene, bohemian bedroom!

Pink + Charcoal Bedroom Makeover

Teen Bedroom Makeover: Splashes of Pink mixed with shades of gray + a pop of citrine. This bedroom revamp was made into a teen hangout oasis. Be inspired by all the storage + new look! Design by www.JennaBurger.com

A few months back, neighbors reached out and challenged asking me to work with their 3 teens to revamp their bedrooms. I initially thought it was going to be a few pillow swaps & maybe a paint color change to call it done. Nope, I was delightfully wrong.

Their intention was for a full makeover from top to bottom with anything they wanted – but within a reasonable budget. They had never worked with a Designer before but wanted my input for each of the kids – 2 girls + a boy – so their rooms reflected them. They have a few more years till they hit college and they wanted to create a place that each of the kids truly love and shows their personality – how awesome are these parents?! Creating a Meaningful home – yes, I love it and was up for the challenge.

WELCOME TO BEDROOM 1

… a teen space reflecting “I Believe in Pink” – throwback to Audrey Hepburn – with splashes of pink mixed with shades of gray.

The process for this makeover was fairly similar to how it works with most clients.

Each teen made a list of wants / needs + what they wanted to keep / what they wanted to ditch. Then I set a date / time with each of the them for a private meeting to discuss their vision for the space. And let me tell you, these teens were PREPARED. Their parents talked through ideas before they met with me to hone in on necessities, but the girls had 2 pages of notes & new exactly what they wanted (the boy not so much, but I was able to ‘capture’ him despite his lack of vision / direction). I was off designing in no time…

To start, I put together a Creative Vision Board for this teen. My intent with a mood board is to share inspiration + actual items that I foresee in the space that tells the story of what the room will look + feel like when complete.

And the floor plan…

Thankfully she was impressed. I knocked it out of the ballpark. Score!

At our initial meeting, she expressed her love for pink. Multiple shades of pink. And dark gray. I loved where this girl was going. She didn’t want, nor did I want to design, a frilly, girly-girl room. No, this room would be soothing, but with pops of color. The range of pinks would be offset with dark hues of gray + a little black thrown in for contrast!

Check out more of the finished room…

When you enter into the bedroom, a large picture window is in front, while the bed + futon are on each side. The bedroom is somewhat tricky with the slanted ceilings of the roof above. The double-sized bed worked best on the one shorter wall of the room, and opposite of it a sleeper futon was added.

To add contrast to the light pink walls, I chose to paint the two lower walls black. The play of light & dark in this space is exquisite. As usual when I mention black, I get the crazy eyes, but they were all for it and trusted me – phew! Thankfully the result was killer, Look how all the lighter hues are offset by the bold black…

One major need + want for this room was storage! With all their stuff, every teen needs storage.

With her love for pink, I new this Ikea bookcase – which can be positioned horizontal or vertical – would be ideal. The lines of it are modern and could ‘live’ for a long time and in different settings.

It fits snuggly under the window, which are surrounded by window panels in colors of pink, red, yellow, and green. The pattern truly captures all the colors of the room and pulls it together.

Right of the window was an opportunity to use the wall for more storage so I found this geometric-looking wall shelf, ideal for trinkets + trophies.

The smaller pattern of the window panels works so well with the larger, bold pattern of the area rug. This modern, vibrant rug which has all the requested colors – pink + gray – is perfect and ties the whole space together.

I always get objections about putting a rug over carpet, but as you see here, the space wouldn’t be the same without…

With all spaces there has to be a balance of color + pattern. All pink or All florals or All geometric, doesn’t work. There has to be a balance and that is achieved by choosing complimentary colors to bring contrast + joining varying patterns that bring texture and depth.

With the bold rug, the bedding had to be minimal + understated. Thankfully this teen was in agreeance and we chose this beautiful white, pinch pleat duvet. Then to the right, we added a white modern desk (offset by the black wall) with clean lines and paired it with a comfortable chair that duals as a vanity chair OR another spot to relax.

Can I just say that I am obsessed with this chair (color: Candid Moment Ebony)?! I need it someplace in my house pronto!  I adore the pattern with pops of color…

ROOM WRAP UP

And that’s a wrap. This teen room was a blast to work on. I was actually a bit nervous to work with a teen, but they were fabulous and one of my best clients yet! They also did a lot of the leg work + execution on their own…

After creating the vision board, I put a resource list together for each teen and then sent them on their way to buy + execute. They were incredible to sticking to the list and made purchases right for the room, which is so important.

Most of the furniture + decor came from ikea, Target, and Hobby Lobby. They also repurposed many items that they already had + DIYed some creations as well (ie: fabric covered cork boards). With a little old + a bit of new, this space is an oasis that this teen is going to enjoy for many years to come.

The only drawback… she might never want to leave…

Master Bedroom Refresh: REVEAL

The master bedroom refresh is finally complete. I’ve been sharing most, if not all, of the steps along the way and it’s been an exciting journey.  I’m thrilled with the result and today I’m ready to share all the nooks + crannies of the room.  Ready? Let’s go…

Master Bedroom Refresh {REVEAL} : Room transformation with inexpensive solutions + DIY projects! You will surely be INSPIRED!

Where it all began…

The Creative Vision Board.  The idea + direction for the master bedroom refresh…

The bedroom took on a new life with an inexpensive upgrade to the bed wall.  Before, all of the walls with the exception of the bed wall, were painted Berkshire Beige when we moved into the house.  The bed wall was painted Texas Leather which is slightly darker, but with all the light that filters in from the large windows, the contrast wasn’t enough.

To really add some depth and contrast to the bed wall, I started out the refresh by going to the dark side and painting the wall a deep chocolate hue called Brownstone by Benjamin Moore.

I had to start out the reveal with my favorite picture because it has my pretty kitty, Jessie.  She made her debut on the blog over a year ago when we finished the foyer floor. Hasn’t she grown so much?!  She’s the sweetest.

This is the area of the room that is to the left of the bed.  It had pictures before, but I rearranged them a bit to create a new and refreshened montage.  It’s amazing how a space can look so different using things you already own.

To put the collection together, I played around a little with the arrangement before adding nails to the wall…

Creating a photo montage - steps to putting it together.

I love the balance of pictures and meaningful (to us) quotes.

In this picture below, you can also see the contrast of the two paint colors.  The dark wall surely makes a statement!

The statement.  The focal point of the room.  THE BED!  With the surrounding new/updated elements, the bed takes on a completely new look and feels brand new, even though it’s 10 years old.  I love the look of fully upholstered beds instead of just a headboard.  It eliminates the need for a bedskirt and gives a higher-end look to the space.  Yes, upholstered beds (with fabric side rails) are slightly more expensive than just a headboard, but they’re totally worth the splurge.  That’s a place to spend the money!!!

I feel like I sleep in luxury every night (and a few weekend afternoons) with my new bedding from Crane and Canopy.  We worked together on choosing the right look and feel for the room.  With the other vibrant colors (plum + citrine), the simpler Linden Gray Border bedding was the perfect compliment. Sleeping under this luxurious 400 thread count duvet is like heavenly bliss.  To be honest, it was difficult to choose a bedding style.  They’re entire collection is beautiful!

The square canvas images above the bed are actually one collection purchased from Ikea years ago.  sorry, but I doubt they’re still available.  As with most rooms I design, I typically start with one element; one statement piece.  The art is ‘The Element’ that the rest of the room evolved around.  The plum pillow on the bed and the striped pillow on the chaise were purchased from Crate and Barrel years ago as well and they compliment the artwork perfectly.  The only new pillows are the citrine shams that I randomly found at Homegoods.  Of course I wasn’t looking for them at the time, but I am so thankful to have went with my gut because they make the room.  In the store, I really didn’t think the color was right, but once home, they were spot on with the hues of the artwork! #score

Breaking up the matching furniture was key to making this room refresh a success.  The space before looked heavy with 4 large pieces of furniture all in a dark hue.  Something had to give.  Eliminating one of the nightstands so the 2 weren’t matchy-matchy, was a great solution.  I relocated the one nightstand to my office and brought in a new smaller, round table in a light gray color.  It makes such a  difference.

With the main wall going darker, other elements had to go lighter, which meant lots of white layers.  The new white velvet window treatments were the perfect compliment, but needed to be jazzed up.  My simple, inexpensive solution?  Add a decorative leading edge!  The update is incredible and the contrasting plum fabric frames the windows beautifully.

Also in this area of the room are the new hanging pendant-turned-light and the revamped desk that was headed curbside. Both were fun projects and made this corner of the room so interesting…  so much more than before.

The desk is surely my most favorite furniture makeover to-date.  I love what the bright hue does for the space + I’m happy to have tried something new – Make Your Own Chalk Finish Paint!

The pictures and artwork seen above the revamped desk are a new gallery montage I created and they continue across almost the entire wall, which is opposite of the bed wall.

This is what I wake up to and see every morning!

I love the new dress form that holds some of my pretty, colorful necklaces.  It brings such an elegant, feminine quality to the bedroom.
